How Does a Student Enroll in Independent Study?

Before enrolling in Independent Study answer the following quick check quiz to see if your student will qualify for Independent Study.  Think about the student and answer the following questions:

Yes

No

1.

Is there evidence that the student can work alone?

2.

Is there an indication that the pupil will work to complete assignments?

3.

Can the student make the necessary appointments with the teacher?

4.

s there an appropriate place and space to study at home?

5.

If the student is under 18 years of age, does the parent understand the supporting role they must play?

6.

Does this student read at least at a 5th grade reading level?

7.

Does the student understand that they are enrolling voluntarily and that a classroom option is available at any time?

If not all answers are “YES”, the parent and student should give strong consideration to another alternative program.

If all answers are yes, the parent or adult student may pick up an application for Alternative Placement in the Counseling office on the Lancaster High School campus.  A conference with the student’s counselor is recommended before the application is completed.  The application includes a Master Agreement which records the student’s subjects and credits, and a Student/Parent Contract which lists the responsibilities of the parents and the student.

The completed application should be turned into the Counseling office.  The application will be reviewed by the Alternative Placement Committee to determine the student’s placement.  Students whose applications are accepted by the committee will be required to attend, with their parents, a registration/orientation meeting in the Independent Study Room (Room 306).  The registration/orientation meeting allows the Independent Study staff to further explain the requirements of Independent Study.  Students will also be given screening tests for math and reading abilities to determine their approximate levels in those areas.

When the registration/orientation meeting is completed, the student and parent must withdraw the student from Lancaster High School.  When the student is withdrawn, he/she will be enrolled into Independent Study.  Textbooks and assignments will then be given to him/her to prepare for the first Independent Study appointment.
