The Fruitvale Story

Project Overview

This is a long-term assignment worth 200 points. Students are expected to complete all work as it is assigned. The entire unit is to be compiled into a booklet, which will be collected at the end of the unit. Due dates for the packet are TO BE ANNOUNCED.

Objectives:

  • Students will investigate an environmental problem through simulation and identify the cause and possible solutions.
  • Students will be able to see a real-world application of previously learned chemistry concepts.
  • Students will become familiar with factors affecting groundwater, chemical toxicity, pollutant concentration, and threshold limits of chemicals and methods of dealing with contamination.

 

Checklist: 

Use the checklist below to guide you.  As you complete or receive a part of the packet check it off.  Be sure you are keeping up as we will have one spot-check mid-way through for a grade.  Use the checklist to put your packet in order and to develop your table of contents.

  14. Short essay summarizing information from patient interviews. 

  15. Map of clinic patient homes and Topographic map of Fruitvale

  16. Student sheets 1:1 and 1:2 “Solids and Liquids” and “Groundwater Movement”

  17. Students sheets 2:1 and 2:1 (continued) “Parts per Million” + Extra Credit Opportunity: Experiment to remove water from a solution.

  18. Student sheets 3:2 and 3:3. “Predicting Distributions” and “What is your drilling plan?”

  19. Fruitvale Water testing data sheets (Front/back of one page) and follow up question from notes.

  23. Remediation Techniques

  24. Reflective essay on the entire unit. (Five paragraphs or more)

  25. Extra Credit Opportunity – Write a 1-2 page report on an environmental problem you research and find information on.

  26. Glossary – should include ALL vocabulary words for the entire unit in alphabetical order.

 

Scoring:

  • Packet complete – 150 points (Based on 5-10 points / required page)
  • Accuracy, neatness and quality of work – 50 points
  • Extra Credit – worth up to 50 points.

 

NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED!!! NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
IF YOU ARE ABSENT GET YOUR PROJECT HERE ON TIME!!!
