EARTH SCIENCE - ONE-YEAR COURSE #12533 Open to Grade 9-12 Prerequisite: None Description: This course is meets the District's and State Department of Education's requirement for one year of physical science and graduation; but, does not count as a laboratory science for the UC or CSU systems. The students are directed towards an understanding of the facts and principles in the physical sciences. Laboratory demonstrations and experiments, problem-solving techniques and scientific method are stressed. BIOLOGY - ONE-YEAR COURSE #12513 Open to Grades 9, 10, 11, 12, Prerequisite: "D" or better in both semesters of Earth Science. 9th graders with grade level reading score. Description: Biology is a college preparatory course which is recognized as a laboratory science. It surveys the major academic areas of the Biological Sciences utilizing lecture, demonstrations, textbooks, and extensive laboratory experiments. Every attempt is made to make students aware of current research methods and career opportunities through the use of various visual display techniques. INTEGRATED BIO-CHEM - ONE-YEAR COURSE #12514 Open to Grades 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: "D" or better in both semesters of Earth Science Description: This course meets high school graduation requirements for life science. Integrated Bio/Chem integrates the treatment of Biology and Chemistry concepts into a single interdisciplinary whole. Themes include atoms, macro-molecules, genetics, human anatomy and physiology, evolution, ecology, and the six kingdoms of life. The course emphasizes problem-solving, decision-making, hands-on learning, career awareness, career explorations, and computer application. Lab activities occupy 20% or more of the course time. GEOSCIENCE - ONE-YEAR COURSE #12546 Open to Grades 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: "C" or better in Biology or Chemistry, Or teacher approval. Description: Geoscience is a college preparatory laboratory science class meeting the entry requirements of the University of California system. It is a rigorous course examining research topics of geology such as seismology, oceanography, volcanology, paleontology, astrogeology, and satellite technology. Internet labs and on-line projects will be utilized. CHEMISTRY - ONE-YEAR COURSE #12515 Open to Grades 11, 12, or grade 10 with teacher approval Prerequisite: "C" or better in previous science class. IMP1 or Algebra 1 must be completed prior to enrolling in the course. Description: Chemistry is a college preparatory course of study designed as an introductory study of the chemical nature of matter, its composition, and its chemical and physical changes. Mathematics is used to gain a better understanding of the chemical concepts studied. Laboratory experimentation is extensive and comprehensive and involves the application of chemical concepts and qualitative and quantitative laboratory methods. AP BIOLOGY ONE-YEAR COURSE #12530 Open to Grades 11, 12 Prerequisite: "B" or better in Biology and Chemistry. Must also be enrolled in or completed IMP 3 or Algebra 2 Description: Advanced Placement Biology is a n enrichment, laboratory science course that emphasizes the major subdivisions of the Biological Sciences. It is intended for the serious science student that also wishes to obtain college credit through examination. Extensive laboratory supplements, lectures, demonstrations, and group activities. Every attempt is made to pattern instruction after a first-year college biology course and to instruct students in the study skills and techniques that will make them successful after high school. AP CHEMISTRY - ONE-YEAR COURSE #12516 Open to Grades 11, 12 Prerequisite: "B" or better in Chemistry and in either IMP 3 or Algebra 2. Description: The Advanced Placement Chemistry course is designed to be the equivalent of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first college year. Advanced Placement Chemistry is an in depth study of the chemical nature of matter, its composition and its chemical and physical changes. Mathematics are used to gain a better understanding of the chemical concepts studied. Laboratory experimentation is extensive and comprehensive, and involves the application of chemical concepts and qualitative and quantitative laboratory methods at the college level. Note: Class will be during "0" period. PHYSICS - ONE-YEAR COURSE #12526 Open to Grades 11, 12 Prerequisite: Grades of "C" or better in: biology or chemistry and in IMP 3or Algebra 2 Description: Physics is a lab science surveying mechanics, waves, sound and light, heat, and electricity and magnetism. It is a course designed to prepare a spectrum of individuals. It includes the college-bound individual pursuing a career in engineering or science and the individual completing his formal education in high school and intent on understanding the physical world in which he lives. ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY - ONE-YEAR COURSE #12511 Open to Grade 11, 12 Prerequisite: Biology or Chemistry with a "C" or better Description: Anatomy and Physiology is an advanced science course which is designed for the more motivated student of biology. The student should be capable of performing in an independent as well as small-group laboratory setting. The fields of inquiry will be: the scientific method, growth, development, genetics, and the anatomy and physiology of the nine systems of the human body. |
